80-G-236449 XPB4Y-2 (BUNO 32086)

3 July 1944 - The first XPB4Y-2 (BUNO 32086), single tailed conversion of a production B-24D Army heavy bomber specifically altered to suit Navy patrol-bomber requirements. It made its first flight 20 September 1943 and the first production contract followed by a month. Twelve .50 caliber machine guns are carried in twin turrets and two twin waist mounts. ECM gear is carried in faired housings under the nose and cockpit, while the larger fairing beneath the forward dorsal turret contains AN/APS-15 ("Mickey") bombing radar, used successfully for "blind" bombing by the Eighth Air Force over Europe.
