Caption: Was the first US Naval officer lost in World War I. Secretary of the Navy named one of the new destroyers launched 4 July 1918 "THE THOMAS" in memory of him. Lieutenant Thomas was commander of the armed guard on the steamship VACUUM which was sunk by a submarine on 28 April 1918. He and several members of his crew perished in an open boat after the sinking of the VACUUM.
