Russian military compound, or "impan," along railway in Manchuria
Title: Russian military compound, or "impan," along railway in Manchuria
Caption: Photographed during the trip, via trans-Siberian railway, to the war zone by Lieutenant Commander N.A. McCully, USN, April 1904. McCully's comments on this: "Along the branch of the railway toward Mukden the small compounds or impans were more numerous, there being one about each five versts and close to the track, and at stations there were two, one on each side of the track. The walls of these were constructed of stone or brick, loopholed for rifle fire, provided with watch towers, and they were located at such distances that they were in sight of each other. The original idea of these was for them to serve as refuges for the Russian population along the line in case of attack by the Chinese bandits, and in war they were posts or stations for the railway guards. They were almost of the same identical model as the Chinese farm houses of the vicinity...." The report includes further description with dimensions. See also plan drawing in NH 101303.
