Description: The USS ANNAPOLIS insignia was adopted upon commissioning in March 1964. The ship's insignia was designed to symbolize those outstanding qualities and salient characteristics which the ship embodies and which make her unique. Quite naturally, therefore, a prominent feature of the design is the large number one; ANNAPOLIS is the first Major Communications Relay ship in the world. Secondly, the letters AGMR, which run diagonally down the shield, designate the type- Auxiliary General Major Relay. The shield, the time-honored symbol of strength and the defensive bulwark, is employed as the basic form of the emblem in order to indicate ANNAPOLIS' prominent role in the network of national defense and the strength and reliability of the vital service which she provides. Symbolic of the fact that this service can be delivered to any command afloat or ashore, the Navy's blue and gold have been chosen as the colors. Choosing the motto "VOX MARIS", "Voice of the Sea", indicates the far reaching, completely mobile, entirely self-contained and independent nature of the ship in the performance of her duties. In ANNAPOLIS, the Navy has truly found a powerful voice, which can reach into the most remote corners of the globe. The Navy has carried its own voice to the sea.color
