Description: Waves of amphibious tractors (LVTs) and landing craft head for the landing beaches, shortly before H-Hour during the invasion of Iwo Jima, 19 February 1945. The island, with Mount Suribachi in the center, is shrouded in smoke from the continuing pre-landing bombardment. Three battleships are visible, with USS Nevada (BB-36), in pattern camouflage paint, at left. The battleship seen faintly in the center, in line with Mount Suribachi, may be USS Idaho (BB-42).
