Photo #: NH 104209 Iwo Jima Operation, 1945
Title: Iwo Jima Operation, 1945
Description: Landing Landscape Marine Corps amtracs and medium tanks, blasted by Japanese artillery, after they bogged down in the soft black volcanic ash of Iwo Jima, litter the beach as other Marines examine the wreckage for possible repair or salvage. This scene is on Blue Beach No. 1, where battle tried veterans of the Fourth Marine Division fought their way ashore. Some of the 800 ships that took part in the action are in the background. Quoted from the original photo caption, released by Commander-in-Chief, Pacific, on 26 February 1945. Note that both amphibious tractors have large holes in their hulls, while the M4 Sherman tank at left is mired in the ground. All have broken tracks. The original print came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the collections of the Naval History and Heritage Command.
