(quoted from the original 1945 vintage caption). Taken by Newcomb, the photograph shows one Marine moving forward in center, carrying a Winchester M1912 shotgun. The Marine in the foreground is holding an M1 Carbine with a grenade launcher attachment. Mount Suribachi is in the left distance. The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files.
