Description: (AKA-56) Unloading equipment at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, circa 1960-1961. This photo was used in a Martin Marietta Corporation press release, apparently dated 11 December 1961, with text reading: Atoms for Antarctica This is the Navy transport Arneb, which has just reached Antarctica with cargo including a prefabricated nuclear power plant and an atomic powered weather station. Both atomic units were built under contract with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission by the Martin Marietta Corporation's Nuclear division at Baltimore and will be the first nuclear systems to go into operation on the icy continent.
