Title: American Dug Outs
Caption: With the American Naval forces at a French port in the war zone. Photo taken about 70 feet underground shows a group of American sailors in a dug out they have built to protect themselves from enemy aviators. The covering of the dugout consists of a corrugated iron roof set in thick concrete. An air space in left open to absorb the shock a second layer of concrete is surfaced with granite blocks that prove themselves excellent in resisting bomb concussion, then on top of this are piled sand bags topped with a glancing roof of thick boiler plate.
