Caption: Bow ornament of USS NEW YORK, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, 11 February 1919. From correspondence of 8 July 1925: "The Commandant has recently discovered the figurehead of the U.S.S. NEW YORK…It was probably taken from the fourth NEW YORK, which was a steam sloop of 490 tons, with twenty-one guns. The ship was originally known as the ONTARIO, but in 1869 the name was changed to NEW YORK..."
