USS DELAWARE figurehead - Tamanend: Front view with measurements
Title: USS DELAWARE figurehead - Tamanend: Front view with measurements
Caption: Front view of the original wooden figurehead of Tamanend, Chief of the Delaware Indians, from USS DELAWARE. In 1929 it was used as the model for the mold from which a bronze replica was cast. It was carved by William Luke (born 1790) of the Gosport Yard, Norfolk, and completed after the ship was launched. Brought to the Naval Academy about 1874-1876, the figurehead was incorrectly called by several names, among them Tecumseh and was dubbed "God of Two-Five," the passing grade at the Academy. It was restored in 1906 and in 1967 was located in Luce Hall at the Academy.
Description: Received from Naval Gun Factory (Navy Yard) and located at Naval Historical Display Center.
