Title: H.C. Hyland Diary Extract
Caption: Extract from the diary kept by a St. George's, Bermuda, businessman, Mr. H.C. Hyland. It pertains to HMS MONARCH and USS PLYMOUTH at Bermuda for the transfer of the body of American philanthropist George Peabody from London to the U.S. Peabody died on 4 November 1869. After services at Westminster Abbey, his body was transported to the U.S. by MONARCH, escorted by a French and an American naval vessels. The burial was on 8 February 1870 at South Danvers (renamed Peabody), Massachusetts.
