Title: Model of Spanish Ship Round Xebec SAN ANTONIO, with 28 guns. 18th Century
Caption: Model of Spanish Ship Round Xebec SAN ANTONIO, with 28 guns. 18th Century. Model from the former Escuela de Nautica de Arenys de Mar/School of Seamanship of Arenys de Mar. The typical three-masted merchant or fishing Xebec, with the foremast sloping toward the bow and the main and mizzen masts almost on end, each with lug sails. The model is of the war xebec with a poleacre rig, called "Round Xebec"/ Jabeque Redondo. In Spain the construction of Xebecs began in the time of Carlos II, and the good results that they gave in the guarding of the coasts and the pursuit of pirates soon caused them to be increased in number. The largest LEBREL, armed with 32 8" and 6" guns, with a displacement of 680 tons. The Xebecs, one of which crossed the Atlantic were ordered eliminated from the Spanish Navy in 1827. Received from Museo Maritimo in Barcelona, Spain. March 30, 1966.
