Caption: Surgeon Bailey Washington, Jr. U.S.N. Born in Westmoreland County, Va. 12, May 1787. Entered Navy in 1810. Surgeon of the USS ENTERPRISE when she captured the HEMS BOXER in the engagement off Portland, Me. Sept 5, 1013, for which he received a silver medal from Congress. Served on Lake Ontario with Comdr, Chauncey, as his fleet surgeon. Fleet surgeon under commodores Rogers, Elliott and Patterson in the Mediterranean and Fleet surgeon of the Pacific Squadron on the U.S.S. OHIO at the taking of the Mexican towns on the Pacific side 1848-1849. Descendant of Col. John Washington who married Ann Pope, and was the first of his name to come to America -who was also an ancestor of General Washington.
