On the 13th day of March 1854, the presents from the United States to the Emperor and the commissioners were landed at Yokohama, no end of interest was displayed by the Japanese, and it was through the novel Western inventions that daily intercourse was started between the Americans, officers and sailors, Marines and Laborers. Expedition to Japan. Japanese officials inspecting presents sent to Japan by the United States. These mechanical inventions greatly interested the Japanese and aided materially in making Perry's negotiations successful. From nature by W.T.P. Lith of Sarony & Co. New York.
