Caption: An early 1920's photograph. He was to be the reserve pilot for the Navy entries in the Detroit "news" air transport trophy race 9 October 1925. He entered the Naval Academy in 1914, graduating in 1917. He served aboard USS WHEELING and USS TENNESSEE FROM 1917 to 1920. In December 1920 he went to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, for instruction in aviation. After completing instruction, he remained at Pensacola until March 1922, when he went to the Aircraft Squadrons, Scouting Fleet on the East Coast. In November 1923, he went to the Naval Air Station, Anacostia, D.C.
