NH 47107 Captain Samuel C. Reid, USN

Captain Samuel C. Reid, USN
Title: Captain Samuel C. Reid, USN
Caption: A portrait painting by John Wesley Jarvis, which was presented to the destroyer USS REID at the time of its launching in 1936 by a direct descendant of Captain Reid, Mrs. Beatrice Reid (or Carroll) Power of Washington, D.C. The original painting at one time hung in the Peale Gallery, New York City, then became the property of the Reid family. The story associated with Captain Reid is that at the commencement of the battle in Fayal Roads (the Azores) he wore a conspicuous uniform cap that was objected to by his officers because it made him a target. Then, stepping back into his cabin, he emerged wearing a top hat, which made him even more conspicuous. The artist objected to painting him in a top hat, but Reid insisted that he be painted as he was in battle. His right hand holds a speaking trumpet and his left a sword. He was 28 at the time.
