Caption: Captain John Paul Jones hailing HMS SERAPIS during the action from the deck of USS BON HOMME RICHARD, 23 September 1779. During the action all firing ceased for several moments and Captain Pearson of SERAPIS called out "have you struck your colors?" "I have not yet begun to fight" replied Captain Jones, whereupon the firing resumed. SERAPIS later struck her colors.
