Title: Battle of Long Island
Caption: Retreat of the Americans under General Stirling across Gowanus creek, 27 August 1776. With Cornwallis and the 71st regiment astride their natural line of retreat, the Americans started across Gowanus creek. British musket and artillery began cutting among them. Smallwood had placed a small body of troops and two field pieces into position to cover the retreat and all but twelve Americans were able to escape.
