NH 63617-KN Insignia: USS WILL ROGERS (SSBN-659)

Insignia: USS WILL ROGERS (SSBN-659)
Title: Insignia: USS WILL ROGERS (SSBN-659)
Caption: This insignia was designed by John La Presle, art director of Mystic Seaport, and was adopted in 1966-1967. Will Rogers, namesake of the ship, was an Oklahoman. That state forms the background of the insignia, encircled by the Lariat that helped to propel Rogers to fame. The figure of Will Rogers on horseback, dim, as from the past, is placed to have him looking toward the new, modern world of advanced technology, a Polaris missile in flight and a submarine moving under the sea. Halfway along the length of the missile is the dog-iron brand, the cattle brand used at the Rogers family ranch. It provides a tie between the two periods: pre-World War II and Post War.
