"Regardez moi," cartoon by James Gillray, 1781.
Title: "Regardez moi," cartoon by James Gillray, 1781.
Caption: This cartoon satirizes the great popularity of the French dancer Gaetan Vestris, who, with his son, was the rage of London society in 1780-1781. Their popularity and the vast sums they made, during a period of war with France, aroused considerable resentment in some English circles. The goose represents in particular, Lord Cholmondeley (1749-1827), a social figure of the day. In a broader sense, the goose also symbolizes the frivolity of many wealthy Englishmen in the face of war and disaster.
