Caption: This insignia was designed during the ship's 1957 Mediterranean deployment by Sergeant Manuel Villalpando, USMC, who was the winner of a shipboard insignia design contest. As his prize, Villalpando was presented with a suitably engraved wrist watch by General R. McC. Pate while in Genoa, Italy.
