Caption: Oil painting by an unidentified artist owned by Mrs. Nicholas C. Bodman, Ithaca, New York. Family history has it that the artist was named Peale. Alexander Claxton (circa 1790-1841), born in Maryland, commissioned 21 February 1831. Died aboard USS CONSTITUTION at Conception, Chile, 7 March 1841.
