NH 64873-KN Insignia: USS TUNNY (SSG-282)

Insignia: USS TUNNY (SSG-282)
Title: Insignia: USS TUNNY (SSG-282)
Caption: This insignia was received in 1958, was chosen in a boat-wide contest several years before. It features the legendary terror of the seas, the dragon, spitting out a guided missile on a tongue of flame. A fist full of torpedoes indicates that the TUNNY still can use that weapon, and the mushroom cloud symbolizes the Nuclear striking power of the submarine's REGULUS missile. The Latin motto, conservatively translated "Don't let them wear you down," represents the TUNNY's determination to carry out her assigned missions, and the tremendous amount of hard work involved in the development of the Navy's first operational guided missile system.
