NH 65222-KN Insignia: USS ARGONAUT (SS-475)

Insignia: USS ARGONAUT (SS-475)
Title: Insignia: USS ARGONAUT (SS-475)
Caption: This insignia was adopted in 1963. The patch photograph was received from the ship in 1968. The insignia is a symbolic portrayal of the background of the ship and her name. The central figure shows an arm of the Argonaut, based on her torpedo striking power, rising up to grasp the golden fleece, "Prize" of the mythical Jason and the Argonauts. The two blue bands represent the oceans in which Argonaut has served. The upper, Atlantic, band carries the three stars of a Vice Admiral's flag, thus signifying that the ship was first flagship of Com Sub Lant. The Pacific band carries the four battle stars earned by the two USS ARGONAUTs. The motto, in Greek, is adapted from a descriptive phrase in the legend of the Argonauts and means "Skilled in seamanship and war." Date of Photo: 1968.
