NH 65224-KN Insignia: USS CANOPUS (AS-34)

Insignia: USS CANOPUS (AS-34)
Title: Insignia: USS CANOPUS (AS-34)
Caption: This insignia was adopted in 1965. It represents in symbolic form the character of the ship. The shield signifies the protective function of CANOPUS, as opposed to the aggressive cutting edge of a combatant. The Greek ship and the stars represent the "Argonavis" constellation in which the star Canopus is found. The large star connecting the scroll and the shield is Canopus. Beside the constellation is a Polaris missile, guided and watched by CANOPUS. The smiling dolphins are a reminder of the ship's mission to cheerfully tend the submarine force. The crossed rifles, encircled, recall the heroic stand of the embattled crew of the first CANOPUS (AS-9) on Bataan. Received from the ship in 1968. Date of Photo: 1968.
