Caption: This insignia, shown here as an embroidered patch, adopted in 1961, was designed by the movie actor John Wayne, upon the request of the USS SAM HOUSTON. It features a large black raven, representing Sam Houston whose honorary Cherokee name was "Raven." The motto, "try me," was Houston's personal motto. The colors blue and gold represent the two crews of the Polaris submarine. Photographed in 1968.
