NH 65545-KN Insignia: USS SEA DRAGON (SSN-584)

Insignia: USS SEA DRAGON (SSN-584)
Title: Insignia: USS SEA DRAGON (SSN-584)
Caption: This insignia was received from the SEADRAGON in 1968 and apparently was adopted shortly before that. The red dragon of its shield alludes to the World War II nickname of the first USS SEADRAGON (SS-194); "Red pirate of the China coast." The six-rayed sun marks the SSN-584 as the Navy's sixth nuclear powered submarine. The shield's white field, and the trident rising from the polar ice cap in the crest, signify the ship's pioneer efforts in the submerged exploration of the Polar Seas, and the Navy unit commendation awarded her for these efforts. The Japanese imperial chrysanthemum behind the globe symbolizes SEADRAGON's recent visits to Japan. Date of Photo: 1968.
