Title: GUSTAVE ZÉDÉ (French submarine, 1893)
Caption: Photograph taken 13 February 1899, showing the boat underway at her minimum displacement when attacking, she is normally submerged to the level of the horizontal line drawn through the conning tower. When in danger of being seen, she submerges further, and uses the primitive periscope (A.B.C.) for navigation. This periscope consists of a tube (A), supported by the brace (C). At the top of the tube is a lens (B). The periscope passes through a water-tight stuffing box in the conning tower and can be directed to any point on the horizon.
