" Sheer Hulks are old ships of wars... The mast of such a vessel is very high, and well strengthened by shrouds and stays, to secure the sheers or engine used to get out the lower masts of a ship, and which is composes of two or more large spars, lashed together. The heels of the sheer rest upon the sides of the hulk with their heads hanging over the ship, the masts of which are to be fixed or removed. the operation is refected by a quantity of large tackie, and two capsterns"
