Caption: Captain William Francis Lynch, Confederate States Navy. Born Norfolk, Virginia 9 April 1801 entered U.S. Navy as midshipman 26 January 1819. Lieutenant 17 May 1828. Commander 5 September 1849 captain 2 April 1856. Resigned 21 April 1861. Appointed CSN to June 1861. Commanded CSN Batteries at Aquia Creek, Virginia 1861 and Mississippi Defense 1862. Paroled 3 May 1865 at Richmond, Virginia. died Baltimore, MD 17 October 1865. Wrote "Narrative of the United States Expedition to The River Jordan and Red Sea" (He commanded The Expedition also "Naval Life: The midshipman, or observation afloat and ashore".
