Title: Insignia: USS RICHARD E. BYRD (DDG-23)
Caption: Embroidered patch of emblem that was adopted about 1964. Its most prominent symbol is the shield of the BYRD family coat of arms. Other devices include a Tartar missile, the figure of Byrd's exploration ship BEAR, and that of the DDG-23. The motto is translated: "sea power from pole to pole."
