Racing sloop ENTERPRISE
Title: Racing sloop ENTERPRISE
Caption: The giant mast on ENTERPRISE stood 162 feet high and tapered from 18 inches at the base to 9 inches at the top. The mast was made of tin--the first time this metal was used in this manner--to reduce weight and wind resistance. ENTERPRISE was created by Charles P. Burges and, helmed by Harold S. Vanderbilt, successfully defended the America's Cup against SHAMROCK V of England, with Ernest (Ted) Heard at the Helm, off Newport, Rhode Island, 1930.
