Caption: Remarks by Captain Leonard M. Nearman, USN, Commanding Officer of KEARSARGE. The ship's last Commanding Officer emphasized the outstanding record of operational proficiency KEARSARGE had built over the years and particularly during its last deployment. He remarked about the excellence of the enlisted crew and made a significant point about military service in today's climate of anti-militarism comparing the present enlisted man with his World War II father. He noted the increased strength, size and endurance of today's fighting man and remarked about the different treatment he receives from the public. At Long Beach, California, 13 February 1970.
