Caption: Rear Admiral Porterfield was born 30 October 1879, in Alabama, and was appointed from that state to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1898. He graduated 25 April 1902. He served in various capacities aboard: USS CHATTANOOGA, USS WEST VIRGINIA, and USS NEVADA. He was Commanding Officer of the following ships: USS ALBATROSS, USS VENETIA, USS WHEELING, USS CASTINE, USS PATOKA, and USS MARYLAND. He was commissioned Rear Admiral on the retired list on 1 July 1937. He died at Oakland, California, in April 1942. USS PORTERFIELD (DD-682) was named in his honor.
