BOEING XPG-2 (BUNO A-6881)
Title: BOEING XPG-2 (BUNO A-6881)
Caption: In service at naval air station Hampton roads, VA., circa 1929- 1932. Originally built about 1926 with tandem Packard liquid- cooled engines, this "one-of-a-kind" patrol flying boat was remodeled at the naval aircraft factory in 1929. Originally the XPB-1, it was not fitted with the Pratt & Whitney radials and re-designates XPB-2. "HR-45" is a station marking, simply meaning airplane #45 at Nas Hampton Roads. In front of it is an early Boeing F4B-1 fighter. The non-standard blue finish on fin and forward fuselage indicate it is a command plane, probably for the use of the air station c.o. Two martin T4M-1 torpedo bombers, both on twin floats, are in the background. Directly behind the flying boat is "HR-44", another air station plane; the T4M on the left is the squadron commander's plane from utility squadron two (VJ-2), based on board USS WRIGHT (AV-1). The small "s" indicates that VJ-2 operates with the scouting fleet. Their size and ruggedness made many of the early torpedo float planes logical utility types after their first-line fleet attack service was over.
