NH 72228 Loening M-8-1S (#a5791)

Loening M-8-1S (#a5791)
Title: Loening M-8-1S (#a5791)
Caption: This aircraft had its wingspan shortened by five feet by the addition of smaller wings. This conversion by the Navy was to increase its speed for the 1920 Pulitzer air race. The plane, flown by Lieutenant B. G. Bradley U.S.M.C., developed a water leak early in the race and was forced out in the last lap after attaining a top speed of 160 m.p.h. This failure ended the Navy's interest in monoplanes for over three years.
