Copied from the Japanese book: "Philippine Expeditionary Force," published in 1943. Original Japanese caption: "On May 9th General Homma enters Manila. When Corregidor fell the total surrender of the American-Filipino Army came about. General Homma entered Manila city accompanied by the high acclaims of the citizens of that city. He attended the memorial services for the officers and men who had fallen in battle for this great cause. The meritorious services of these men in the cause of Greater East Asia will shine eternally with the Southern Cross. The power of the Emperor saved the Philippines. The people of Manila go about with smiling faces and the wheels of the little horse-drawn carts sing with joy."
