He was killed in action on board the German blockade runner KARIN on 10 March 1943, while serving as a member of a boarding party from USS EBERLE (DD-430). USS WILLIAM J. PATTISON (DE-594, APD-104) is named in his honor. Miss McKillop was the ship's sponsor.
