Caption: In dry dock at the Boston Naval Shipyard, circa December 1959, showing her newly installed experimental pump jet propulsion system. These were part of a larger noise reduction program designed to allow destroyers to operate quietly in submarine infested waters. The pump jets replace the noisier conventional propellers and are enclosed in nacelles almost ten feet in diameter and fifteen feet long. They were installed by the Boston Naval Shipyard.
