Photo #: NH 80555 War Game at the Philadelphia Navy Yard
Title: War Game at the Philadelphia Navy Yard
Description: 13 April 1920. Models on the floor represent seventeen ships steaming toward the left in four columns of four ships each, with a flagship in the guide position. Players at the tables represent several squadrons, with identifiable ships named including: New Hampshire (Squadron Two) at left, Connecticut & South Carolina (Squadron Three) in center, and Michigan & Minnesota at right. Stands on the tables appear to be flying flag signals, with other signal flags arrayed on the table tops. Among the officers present are Vice Admiral Hilary P. Jones, Commander, Atlantic Fleet Squadron TWO (right center foreground, with hand on table edge) and his Chief of Staff, Captain Frank B. Upham (at VAdm. Jones' immediate left, with arm resting on chair back). On this photograph's date, all ships in VAdm. Jones' command were in reduced commission at Philadelphia. Collection of Rear Admiral Frank B. Upham. Courtesy of the Naval Historical Foundation, Washington, D.C. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
