Caption: Portrait of Ensign Everett Carlton Strickland, USN. DE-333 was named in his honor. A native of Waterport, New York, he lost his life in the Battle of Savo Island, 9 August 1942. Ensign Strickland was born 6 July 1918, the son of Everett J. and Elizabeth Tuttle Strickland. Prior to entering naval service he attended Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Enlisting 17 February 1941, he was designated a Naval Aviator and commissioned an ensign after completion of his training at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida. Ensign Strickland was attached to USS ASTORIA (CA-34) and participated in the Battles of Midway and Coral Sea before losing his life in the Solomon Islands.
