Caption: Photographed at the Royal Navy Yard, La Spezia, not long before being launched on November 21, 1885. Note the two guards, apparently Royal Guards (Carabinieri), one at the foot of the bow and another on deck abaft the anchor. The ship's short midships armor belt-mild steel 450mm thick-was not yet installed at this time.
