Title: Jeannette Arctic exploring expedition, 1879-1881
Description: Sketch by Chief Engineer George Melville, showing how USS Jeannette's ceiling timber was crushed against a reinforcing truss by the pressure of the Arctic ice, during the winter of 1879-1880. The damage was discovered in the port coal bunker on 4 March 1880 and was about 3/4 inch deep. The wood was Oregon pine. Engraving copied from The Voyage of the Jeannette ..., Volume I, page 275, edited by Emma DeLong, published in 1884. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
