Caption: Three-day old son of Mrs. Desanka Mohorovicic of New York, at a Norfolk, Virginia. Hospital with his mother and sister, Visna. He was born at sea in a crowded lifeboat after the passenger ship CITY OF NEW YORK was sunk by German submarine U-160 off the North Carolina coast on 29 March 1942. He was named in honor of USS ROPER (DD-147), which picked them up.
