NH 97085 Japanese Fishhawk Sailor's Pet

Photo #: NH 97085 Japanese Fishhawk Sailor's Pet
Title: Japanese Fishhawk Sailor's Pet
Description: Navy men around the world are famed for their selection of odd and assorted pets and mascots. Jimmy D. Clark, fireman, USN, ... acquired a Japanese fishhawk as a pet when the fierce looking little bird, apparently driven offshore by a heavy storm, landed aboard the hospital ship USS Consolation (AH-15) four days before reaching Japan ... Today, as the Consolation carries on its grimmer task of caring for UN wounded in Korea, the misplaced and much wounded fishhawk flops to and fro about the ship with one of its legs in a splint. Says Clark, 'We haven't decided on a name for him yet. No one knows how to say Little Pest in Japanese.' Photograph and caption released by Commander Naval Forces Far East, under date of 17 October 1951. Note markings on metal lifeboats behind Fireman Clark. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the All Hands collection at the Naval History and Heritage Command.
