Caption: Erected in 1881 in the Protestant Cemetery in Valparaiso, Chile in memory of the officers and men killed on board the U.S. Navy frigate USS ESSEX during the War of 1812. On 28 March 1814, the ESSEX engaged two British warships, the frigate HMS PHOEBE and the brig HMS CHERUB in Valparaiso harbor.
