American Schooner GIPSEY Captured by HMS BELLE POULE, April 1812
Title: American Schooner GIPSEY Captured by HMS BELLE POULE, April 1812
Caption: On 30 April 1812, the schooner GIPSY of New York was captured by the British 20-gun ship HMS HERMES, Captain the Honorable Henry W. Percy and the 38-gun frigate HMS BELLE POULE, Captain James Brisbane, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, after a chase of three days and nights. She was bound from New York to Bordeaux with a cargo value of £50,000. The schooner was a most superb vessel of 300 tons burden, carried 10 16-pounder carronades and one long 18-pounder swivel between her main and foremast, with a complement of 80 men and two ferocious dogs. She had twice surrendered to the HERMES previous to falling in with the BELLE POULE and endeavored to effect her escape each time by hauling off on a different tack while the ship was in the act of taking in sail and rounding to. The crew of the GIPSEY made desperate efforts to regain possession of their vessel after being boarded by the boats of the HERMES with twenty armed men. The schooner's men, with the assistance of their dogs, after a severe struggle, were overpowered.
