Title: The American Privateer MONTGOMERY and HMS SURINAM, 6 December 1812
Caption: On 6 December 1812, the American privateer brig MONTGOMERY, 10 6-pounders and 2 short 18-pounders, Captain Upton of Boston, cruising off the South American coast got alongside by mistake the British war brig HMS SURINAM, 18 32-pounder carronades and 2 long 9-pounders. She remained there for half an hour when the SURINAM was glad to let her go. The SURINAM threw 297 pounds of metal at a broadside, the MONTGOMERY threw 48 pounds, allowing that the American shot were of full weight.
