Capture of Oswego, May 1814
Title: Capture of Oswego, May 1814
Caption: On 5 May 1814, a British squadron, the 58-gun HMS PRINCE REGENT, Commodore Richard O'Connor bearing the broad pennant of Commodore Sir James Yeo, the 48-gun HMS PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, the 22-gun HMS NIAGARA, the 22-gun HMS MONTREAL, the 16-gun brig HMS CHARWELL, the 16-gun brig HMS STAR and the armed schooner HMS MAGNET, having on board 1,100 troops under Lieutenant General Drummond arrived off Oswego, Lake Ontario. Captain Collier in the MAGNET reconnoitered the position but a heavy gale rendered it necessary to gain an offing. On the 6th, the squadron stood in and the boats with two hundred seaman armed with pikes, Captain Mulcaster, 400 Marines, Major Malcolm and 140 troops, the whole under Lieutenant Colonel Fischer were landed, covered by ticipate. The batteries were stormed after a gallant defense by Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell and his 300 soldiers and sailors. The MONTREAL was set on fire three times and much cut up in hull, masts and rigging by the fire of the two long 24-pounders of the fore that worked steadily in spite of the storm of iron fired from the British fleet. The Americans lost six killed and 38 wounded, these falling into enemy hands. The British lost 22 killed and 73 wounded including Captain Mulcaster, dangerously.
